The Houston Roughnecks and the San Antonio Brahmas met for the first and only time in the 2024 UFL season. In their previous two games during the 2023 XFL season, Houston won both matches.

San Antonio was playing to solidify their hold on a playoff spot in the XFL Conference. If the Brahmas win this game, they would be tied with the St. Louis Battlehawks with identical 5-2 records. A win by the Houston Roughnecks would keep their slim playoff hopes alive.

The J.J. Molson kickoff went 74 yards and was returned to the San Antonio 32 by K.D. Cannon. San Antonio Brahmas quarterback Quinten Dormady passed to John Lovett for a gain of 4 yards, and then passed deep to Landen Akers for a 25-yard gain on the Houston 39. A pass intended for Lovett fell incomplete, and then a handoff to Lovett gained 6 yards. On third and 4, Dormady’s pass to Justin Smith was incomplete, but a defensive offside penalty gave the Brahmas a first down.

Dormady passed deep to Cody Latimer for a gain of 20 yards, and then handed to Lovett for a 6-yard run. On another handoff to Lovett, he fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Houston’s Glen Logan.

Houston quarterback Jarrett Guarantano started a drive on his own 4-yard line. A handoff to Mark Thompson resulted in a loss of 2 yards, and then a handoff to T. J. Pledger gained 6 yards. A pass intended for Emmanuel Butler was incomplete, but drew a 15-yard defensive pass interference penalty. Guarantano handed to Pledger for one yard, and then passed incomplete to Thompson. On third and 10, a pass to Keke Chism was well defended and fell incomplete, and the Roughnecks were forced to punt.

The Hunter Niswander punt was returned by Marquez Stevenson to the San Antonio 37. Dormady passed to Lovett for a 5-yard gain, and then passed to Jontre Kirklin for 16 yards more. A deep pass to K.D. Cannon fell incomplete, and then a pass to Stevenson gained 10 yards and moved the markers to the Houston 33.

Dormady handed to Lovett for no gain, and then handed to Morgan Ellison for a 16-yard run. A pass intended for Smith fell incomplete, and then a pass to Lovett was caught for a 6-yard gain. On third and 4, a handoff to Stevenson resulted in a fumble which was recovered by Houston’s Donald Rutledge on the Houston 7-yard line.

Guarantano handed to Pledger for a 5-yard gain, and then passed to Cyril Grayson for 9 yards and a first down on the Houston 21. Another handoff to Pledger lost a yard, and then Guarantano could not complete a pass to Grayson. On Third and 11, Guarantano was sacked for an 8-yard loss, and the Roughnecks were forced to punt. The Niswander punt was returned by Stevenson to the San Antonio 46 as the first quarter ended.

Dormady passed complete to Stevenson for 10 yards, and then passed deep to Landen Akers for a 29-yard gain to the Houston 15. A handoff to Lovett gained 7 yards, and then Dormady passed incomplete. On third and 3, a pass to Smith fell incomplete and the Brahmas settled for a 26-yard Ryan Santoso field goal to make the score 3-0 for San Antonio.

During the return, the Roughnecks were penalized 15 yards for an Illegal blindside block putting the ball on their own 10-yard line. A handoff to Mark Thompson gained a few yards, but a defensive offside penalty gave the Roughnecks 5 yards. Another handoff to Thompson lost a yard, and then Guarantano went back to Thompson for no gain. On third down, Guarantano passed 15 yards to Anthony Ratliff-Williams for a first down on the Houston 25.

A handoff to Pledger gained 2 yards, and then a pass to Justin Hall gained 5 yards. On third and 3, Guarantano was pressured and sacked for a 5-yard loss. The Roughnecks were forced to punt.

The Niswander punt was downed on the San Antonio 25-yard line. Dormady handed to Lovett for no gain, and then scrambled for a 6-yard gain. On third down a pass fell incomplete, but an illegal shift penalty gave the Brahmas a 5-yard loss. On fourth down, San Antonio was force to punt.

The Brad Wing punt was returned by Hall to the Houston 20-yard line. Guarantano passed 14 yards to Butler, and then handed to Pledger for a 5-yard gain. A false start penalty pushed the Roughnecks back 5 yards, and then a handoff to Pledger got back 7 yards. On third and 4, Guarantano was pressured, but managed to complete a pass to Keke Chism for a 13-yard gain and a first down on the San Antonio 46. Guarantano passed again to Chism but it fell incomplete, and then a pass intended for Bowman fell to the turf as the two-minute warning was announced.

The Roughnecks were penalized for a false start, and then on third and 15, Guarantano was pressured and scrambled, but gained no yards. The Roughnecks were forced to punt.

The Niswander punt hit the goal line for a touchback. From his own 25-yard line, and with 1:43 remaining, Dormady passed 19 yards to Akers, and then Dormady was pressured and tackled for no gain. A pass to Lovett fell incomplete, and then on third and 9, Dormady passed deep for Stevenson and the ball sailed over his head. The Brahmas punted.

The Brad Wing punt went into the end zone for a touchback. From his own 25-yard line, and with 1:16 remaining, Guarantano handed to Pledger for a 1-yard gain, and then passed 8 yards to Ratliff-Williams. A 3-yard run by Pledger moved the chains, and then Guarantano passed deep 41 yards to a wide-open Justin Hall on the San Antonio 22-yard line. San Antonio head coach Wade Phillips challenge the play for offensive holding, and the challenge failed.

With 0:09 on the clock, Guarantano dropped back to pass and was stripped of the ball, with the ball recovered by Houston. Now with only 0:03 remaining, Houston attempted a 48-yard J.J. Molson field goal, which was good to make the score tied 3-3 at halftime.

The second half began with Reggie Roberson returning the Ryan Santoso kickoff to the Houston 31-yard line. Guarantano handed to Thompson for a 4-yard gain, and then could not complete a pass to Bowman. On third down, Guarantano was sacked for a 6-yard loss, and the Roughnecks punted.

The Niswander punt was returned by Stevenson to the San Antonio 24. A pass to Lovett was incomplete, and then a pass to Smith was dropped. On third down, Dormady was strip sacked by Chris Odom for an 8-yard loss. The ball was recovered by Houston’s Ethan Westbrooks on the San Antonio 25.

Guarantano passed 2 yards to Ratliff-Williams, and then could not complete a pass to Chism. On third down, Guarantano used his legs and scrambled for 8 yards and a first down. A handoff to Thompson gained 1 yard, and then Pledger ran for 4 yards. On third and 4, a low throw was caught by Justin Hall on the San Antonio 3-yard line for a first down.

A false start penalty moved the Roughnecks back 5 yards, and then Guarantano ran for a 3-yard gain. Guarantano was sacked for a 4-yard loss, and then he was sacked again for a 5-yard loss. On fourth down, J.J. Molson kicked a 31-yard field goal to make the score 6-3 for Houston.

The Molson kickoff was returned to the San Antonio 17-yard line by K.D. Cannon. A handoff to Lovett lost a yard, and then Dormady was sacked for a 5-yard loss. A pass to Lovett was not caught, and the Brahmas were forced to punt.

The Brad Wing punt was downed on the San Antonio 48. Guarantano passed 2 yards to Grayson, and then handed to Pledger who lost 3 yards. A pass intended for Hall was incomplete, and the Roughnecks attempted a 62-yard Molson field goal, which was good, making the score 9-3 for Houston.

The Molson kickoff was returned by Cannon to the San Antonio 35-yard line. Dormady handed to Lovett who lost a yard, and then a pass to Smith fell incomplete. On third down, Dormady passed deep for Smith but was picked off by Colby Richardson at the Houston 40.

Reid Sinnett came in at quarterback and handed to Thompson for a 1-yard gain. Another handoff to Thompson was broken open for a 36-yard run to the San Antonio 25. A handoff to Pledger gained 6 yards as the third quarter ended.

Sinnett passed 11 yards to Hall, and then handed to Thompson for no gain. Another handoff to Thompson lost a yard and then a pass to Chism gained 6 yards. The Roughnecks settled for a 21-yard Molson field goal to make the score 12-3 for Houston.

The Molson kickoff was returned by Cannon to the San Antonio 31. Kevin Hogan came in at quarterback for San Antonio, and handed to Lovett for a 2-yard gain. A 10-yard pass to Kirklin was good for a first down, and then Hogan scrambled for a 3 yard gain. A handoff to Lovett found a hole up the middle for a 6-yard run, and then Ellison ran 2 yards for another first down.

Hogan passed deep and was intercepted by Markel Roby, but he was out of bounds. Then, Hogan passed short to Lovett who broke a tackle to gain 9 yards. On third and 1, as Hogan was being tackled he managed to pass to Alize Mack who lost a yard. On fourth down, a handoff to Lovett made 3 yards for the first down.

Hogan rushed left, and was swarm tackled for no gain, and then a 15-yard pass to Kirklin put the ball on the Houston 19-yard line. A pass to Stevenson in the end zone was over everyone’s head, and then a handoff to Lovett gained 10 yards. An Ellison run gained 6 yards for a first down on the Houston 4. A handoff to Ellison was run out of bounds after a 1-yard gain, and then Hogan flipped the ball to Kirklin for a short gain, but a Houston off side penalty put the ball on the 2-yard line.

A handoff to Lovett resulted in a 3-yard loss, and then on third down Lovett caught a quick pass just short of the goal line. On fourth down, Hogan rushed but was marked short of the goal line. However, a defensive face masking penalty gave the Brahmas a first down on the half yard line. A Lovett run put the ball into the end zone for a Brahmas touchdown. The three-point conversion attempt was good on a 10-yard pass to Cody Latimer to tie the game at 12 points apiece.

With 2:24 remaining, the Santoso kickoff was returned by Roberson and fumbled. San Antonio’s Teez Tabor recovered the fumble on the Houston 42-yard line.

A handoff to Lovett gained 5 yards as the two-minute warning was announced.

Hogan handed to Lovett for a 1-yard run, and then on third and 4, Hogan handed to Lovett who ran 6 yards up the middle for a first down on the Houston 31. A run by Lovett lost a yard, and then another run by Lovett lost another yard. With 0:01 remaining, Ryan Santoso attempted a 51-yard field goal, and it was good.

The final score was San Antonio Brahmas 15, Houston Roughnecks 12.
