With the Houston Roughnecks dropping another game and settling on a 1-5 record, it is important for the team to get a win this week, not only to shore up their slim playoff hopes but also for pride.

Head coach Curtis C.J. Johnson is looking at everything as he prepares for his Week 7 home game against the San Antonio Brahmas.

“We are looking at everything,” Johnson said. “Looking at the quarterback position, and see if we can get someone in there to score some points. Looking at these receivers and seeing who can do what we need.”

Johnson said he felt the offensive line was playing a little better and only gave up a couple of sacks last week. Also, the defense was playing well, but it seems the offense is where Johnson felt it needed improvement, and only scoring two touchdowns in the last two games was unacceptable.

“Offensively, we’ve got to score points,” Johnson said. “We are looking at every avenue we can to get some points on the board. If it takes more shots downfield, We have to do all those things. I think that’s what we’re preparing to do.”

A bright spot for the Roughnecks has been the play of running back Mark Thompson. Since he has returned from injury, Thompson has been showing sparks of his past success, scoring a touchdown in the Roughneck’s last game and making it look easy, waltzing into the endzone like he belonged there. Clearly, Johnson is hoping for more of the same in the next game.

“When we get down in the red zone, we’ve got to give him the ball,” Johnson said.

However, Johnson admitted he was looking for a more balanced offense.

“We just have to find a balance, because teams are not going to let us run Mark Thompson in the endzone like that all the time,” Johnson explained. “So, we have to find a way to get the ball in the air to these receivers.”

Head coach C. J. Johnson and his Roughnecks host the visiting San Antonio Brahmas at Rice Field this Sunday, May 12, at 2:00PM CT. The game will broadcast on ESPN (Streaming). Tickets are available at Ticketmaster and Stubhub.
