XFL “Expansion” doesn’t mean more teams

In a recent People Magazine piece, a newly minted XFL owner Dany Garcia spoke about “expansion” in relation to the XFL.

“I have a production company, so making sure that content is there, and sharing that with the audience is going to be a big part of our work as well,” she adds. “Eventually, there’s team expansion. That’s got to happen.”

People interpreted this to mean that Garcia was planning on adding to the current slate of eight XFL teams. Excitement has been growing among XFL fans over the possibility of more teams. However, perhaps Dany was simply referring to the concept of expanding the production of media content.

Greg Parks wrote about this a week ago, this time referring to a Sports Illustrated article where Dany made the remark, “Expansion. Expansion and more storytelling. Storytelling that lives in a 365-day way, we’re talking 24/7.”

Greg Parks got it. His take on Dany’s response was:

When asked by SI what’s next for the league, Garcia’s first response was “expansion.” … however, could Garcia have meant something other than expanding the number of teams? She followed up by saying “expansion and more storytelling,” citing the desire for the league to be in the consciousness of the fan year-round; could she mean expansion in terms of expanding marketing, social media, and engagement? When the question of expansion was posed to a source close to the league, the response made it clear that the new owners would never think about league expansion at this time. However, the same source indicated that the idea of expanding the leagues footprint from a 12-week season to a 365 day production is definitely on the table, as the new owners see an opportunity for fan engagement to happen all year round.

And that’s your expansion.

On August 21st, the new ownership group will officially take control of the league. At this time, we will likely begin to hear more concrete plans about the XFL’s future.

By the way, we think Dany’s idea of “expansion” is a wonderful plan. We can’t wait to see it!

  1. I like expansion. We as fans want to be apart of the team as well. Shaking hands and getting to talk to a player is awesome. Just like Cleveland they jump into the stands for fans and we love it.. I met lance dunbar and frank alexander during the Dallas showcase it was awesome I thought I had just been blessed as a special fan! I want that back, please. let us be apart of the team!

  2. XFL Expansion should be more teams,
If I was another one of the owners I could bring back the AAF Teams and Orlando,San Antonio,San Diego,Salt Lake City,Birmingham,Atlanta,Phoenix and Memphis can have their spring teams back, and XFL can have 16 teams total,I would like for XFL to last until the first days May too,It would be cool,Especially to have 3 Texas teams, unlike NFL.
