ORLANDO, Fla. (5 December 2000) — Ty Law, who helped the Orlando Predators to an Arena Football League championship last season, has been obtained by the Orlando Rage of the XFL.
Law, a wide receiver/linebacker for the Predators, reached career highs in receptions (55), yards (766) and touchdowns (13) last season in helping the team to a 13-3 record. The Predators then swept through the AFL playoffs, to claim their second title in three years. At linebacker, Law contributed 18 tackles with a fumble recover and an interception.
In his AFL career, Law had 93 catches for 1,285 yards and 24 touchdowns. He played in nine post-season games and three championship games. He also played two years of professional baseball in the Houston (1993) and Kansas City (1994) organizations. Law was bypassed in the XFL’s Player Allocation and Selection System (P.A.S.S.) Draft in October, but was claimed from the player pool on Tuesday. Law will play wide receiver with the Rage. He replaced Gerald Williams on the Rage roster. Williams, who played at the University of Oklahoma and went to camp with the Philadelphia Eagles last season, was waived by the Rage following last month’s mini-camp.
In addition to Law, the Rage also claimed offensive tackle Derrick Levake from the P.A.S.S. pool. A former star lineman at Wisconsin-Whitewater, Levake earned All-America honors as a senior in 1994. He served a stint in the military before attending camp with the Cincinnati Bengals in 1998.
Levake, 6-5, 305-lbs., played the last two seasons for the Amsterdam Admirals in NFL-Europe. He missed part of the 2000 season with a knee injury.
