Orlando – (4 February 2001) — A crowd of 35,603 football-crazed Orlando Rage fans packed the Citrus Bowl to witness their Orlando Rage’s first ever game, an exciting 33-29 win over the visiting Chicago Enforcers.
Not since the World League has there been a professional football franchise claiming Orlando as home, but that is now over. The Rage has quickly become almost as popular as the NBA’s Orlando Magic in just a short time. Live broadcasts from WTKS 104.1 Real Radio also gave the Rage an additional medium to reach out to potential fans.
Rage QB Jeff Brohm was the hero for the home team this game, passing for 217 yards and four TDs; three to WR Dileo Burks, and a 51 yard strike to WR Kevin Swayne on the very first offensive play in Rage history. Swayne’s ability to go in forward motion before the snap count allowed the speedy WR to create a 6 yard cushion from the nearest defensive back, and Brohm hit Swayne in stride to score first.
Brohm was often able to examine the defense several times over, as a result of his offensive line’s fantastic pass blocking. Already, the Rage offensive line looks to be one of the the best among this fledgling league.
As expected, Enforcers’ RB John Avery provided most of the highlights for his team. Chicago coach Ron Meyer went to Avery on the ground early and often, as the Ole Miss alumni gained 157 years on 25 carries(6.28 yards/carry average), as well as three receptions out of the backfield for 93 yards(31 yards/catch). The former 1st round draft pick showcased versatility along with game breaking speed, as evident by his 68 yard touchdown reception, and his 64 yard TD run. After this game, it is apparent that John Avery is one of the most dangerous men in the XFL.
Next week has the San Francisco Demons visiting the Rage,and Chicago takes on the LA Maniax next Saturday. Both games are set to kickoff at 8P.M.,EST, and are scheduled to air on NBC.
