This will be a matchup of two teams whose seasons are going in opposite directions, with Orlando on a two-game losing streak and Arlington coming off a loss, but with all the confidence of a winning squad.
Last week, after falling to the Houston Roughnecks by a score of 23-14, Arlington is ready to change their fortunes against the Guardians. Quarterback Drew Plitt had a respectable performance, completing 15 of his 29 passes for 120 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. However, the Renegades only gained 43 yards on the ground, and they need to ramp up their running game. It looks like the Renegades will start quarterback Kyle Sloter in this game, and they have added running back Kenneth Farrow to their roster, although it is still unsure if Farrow will be active on Sunday. Against the Roughnecks, Arlington’s defensive effort was hit-and-miss as they only allowed 242 total yards against Houston and forced three turnovers, but they let Houston take an 11-0 lead after the first quarter, which the Renegades could not overcome.
The Guardians are coming off two games where they did not seem to be competitive, including their home opener last weekend where the San Antonio Brahmas dominated them 30-12. Unfortunately, that game saw head coach Terrell Buckley remark that he “needed new players,” a comment that went viral. Last week, quarterback Paxton Lynch only completed nine of 19 passes for 79 yards and one touchdown as Orlando could not generate a consistent offensive effort.
What should we look for?
Statistically, the Guardians have the lowest scoring in the XFL. Although Paxton Lynch and Deondre Francois have combined for four interceptions, all four of their touchdowns have been scored through the air. Orlando needs to watch out as Arlington’s defense has been incredibly opportunistic. The Renegades have four fumble recoveries in addition to two interceptions that have been returned for touchdowns. Also, the Renegades’ defense has managed 9 sacks in two games, so you can be sure Orlando’s passers will be under pressure. If the Guardian’s could get their running game going they might be able to thwart Arlington’s pass defense .
The Guardians’ defense needs to make their own statement by forcing turnovers of their own, something they have only been able to do twice in their two games so far. If the Guardians’ defense can come up big early in this game, they will give their offence a lift.
Meanwhile, Arlington head coach Bob Stoops and offensive coordinator Jonathan Hayes will attempt to exploit Orlando’s issues by being aggressive with their offense. They’ll likely ask quarterback Kyle Sloter to come out throwing, attempting to take advantage of a Guardian’s secondary that has already allowed five touchdown passes. Look for receiver Sal Cannella to be a down field target, as he has already hauled in 2 passes for 108 yards, although he is looking for his first major. Running back De’Veon Smith will also be asked to pick up yards on the ground, something he is more than capable of doing. Arlington hasn’t been able to establish a strong ground game so far this season, but this matchup against a porous Orlando defense may be the opportunity they are looking for.
Conclusion
The beginning of this game is key. Will the Renegades get the quick start they want, or will the Guardians defense come together and thwart their efforts? Orlando needs to keep the score tight and not let Arlington get too far ahead in the first half.
Of course, Vegas has the Renegades as 8-point favorites in this game. If you like to follow the money, you might expect Arlington to come out ahead in this matchup.
