Josh Johnson was a standout Quarterback for the XFL’s LA Wildcats

Last Friday, it was reported that journeyman quarterback and former Los Angeles Wildcat Josh Johnson signed with the San Francisco 49ers, and was placed on their practice squad. Johnson previously had stints with the 49ers back in 2012 as a practice squad member and in 2014.

Johnson at age 34 can still sling the ball as he showcased as a Wildcat with his 1,076 yards passing, 11 touchdowns, and 106.3 quarterback rating.  The quarterback proved that he can learn a playbook quickly and play smart.

An example of Josh Johnson had to learn quickly was in 2018 when he signed to the Washington Football Team. He actually played the video game, Madden to help him learn his teammate’s names.

What to Look for in San Francisco

The former Wildcat will battle current back up quarterbacks CJ Beathard and Nick Mullens. Both of those quarterbacks have shown flashes of greatness, but never much long term, but they are sturdy back up options. Johnson could potentially be used in a mentor role, being he has been with thirteen NFL teams, three others for a total of 16 teams in his career; Johnson has a lot of football knowledge within his mind.

Johnson has a dual-threat ability to match his arm. The escapability trait is not very common within a 49er quarterback being the signal-callers are the majority of the time pocket passers.

Johnson in just four games which three of which were starts showcased his legs. He ran for 120 yards on 23 attempts with a touchdown, that averages to be over five yards a carry with 5.2 yards per attempt. In his time as a Wildcat he didn’t need to showcase it much, but do keep in mind he has the electrifying moves.

The journey continues

The veteran quarterback has no signs of stopping anytime soon, a lot of players at 34 are showing signs of wear and tear. That is not the case for Johnson, he plays like he is in his prime, over a dozen teams and four different leagues the grind does not stop.

He truly lives up to his social media handle @Head8cke, the new 49er quarterback can indubitably be a headache for all defenses at any pro level, that includes the NFL.
