The San Antonio Brahmas entered XFL week nine with an outside chance of still playing for the South Division Championship. With two weeks left to play, the Brahmas sat two games back of the second place Arlington Renegades (4-4). If San Antonio managed to secure wins over Orlando in this game and against D.C. in week 10, and the Renegades lost their games in weeks nine and 10, there is postseason possibility.
Orlando’s playoff chances left last week. This week they are playing for pride, and with it, a chance to spoil the Brahmas slim playoff hopes. Neither team has had what could be considered a successful season, both ranking at the bottom of the XFL standings.
The Orlando Guardians took the kickoff and quarterback Quinten Dormady started his opening drive on his own 27. The Guardians started on the ground with Dormady handing to Devin Darrington for a 5-yard rush, and then a 4-yard rush. On 3rd down Dormady took to the air passing to Ryan Becker who made 17-yards out of a short pass. Then, a handoff to Darrington was good for a 17-yard rush to the San Antonio 30-yard line. Dormady passed to Charleston Rambo in the end zone, and drew a defensive pass interference call that put the ball on the 4-yard line. A 4-yard pass to Jordan Thomas gave the Guardians the first touchdown of the game. San Antonio head coach Hines Ward challenged the play for offensive pass interference, but the challenged failed. The 2-point conversion was good, making the score 8-0 for Orlando.
San Antonio quarterback Jack Coan started his opening drive on his own 29-yard line. A 13-yard pass to Nick Holley moved the chains, but the Brahmas could not do much more and they were forced to punt.
Dormady got possession on his own 13-yard line and lost 3-yards in a quarterback rush. Dormady could not get going at all, and was sacked for a 6-yard loss on 3rd down. The Guardians punted. Akers could not receive the ball and it bounced back to the San Antonio 35, where the Brahmas took possession.
Coan handed to Jacques Patrick, and he did not quit, grinding out 17-yards for the Brahmas. On 2nd and 7, Patrick made another 5 yards, but a pass to Yelder on 3rd down was dropped. On 4th and 2, Patrick ran 3 yards to pick up a first down on the Orlando 37. On 3rd and 8, Akers caught a pass which was ruled to be just short of the first down marker. Upon review the officials moved the chains.
At the end of the 1st quarter Orlando led 8-0.
Coan passed into the end zone, but it was caught out of bounds. San Antonio settled for a 38-yard Parker Romo field goal to make the score 8-3 for Orlando.
Dormady started on his own 22-yard line and was sacked hard by Drew Beesley for a 7-yard loss. Dormady handed to Darrington for a 5-yard scamper, and then passed to Rambo for a 7-yard gain. With not enough for a first down Orlando set up to punt, but punter Mac Brown faked the punt and passed 69-yards to K.D. Cannon who took the ball to the San Antonio 4-yard line. On 3rd down, Darrington ran into the end zone for the Orlando major. The 1-point conversion failed, making the score 14-3 for the Guardians.
Jack Coan started the San Antonio drive deep on his own 13-yard line. A 17-yard pass to T. J. Vasher moved the sticks. Then, a 2-yard Hilliman rush, plus an 8-yard Hilliman catch moved the chains again. Coan handed to Hilliman for a 4-yard gain, and then went back to Hilliman for 4 more yards. On 3rd and 2, Coan bobbled the snap and then was sacked for a 9-yard loss. San Antonio was forced to punt.
On the punt return, Justin Rogers was pinned down at the Guardians 15-yard line. Deondre Francois came in at quarterback and handed to Darrington, who got stuffed for a loss of 2-yards. Francois rushed for a 4-yard gain, and then on 3rd down Francois connected to Eli Rogers for an 8-yard pass and a first down. A Darrington rush was good for 9-yards, and then Francois handed to Darrington again for 5-yards which moved the chains. A holding penalty made it 1st and 20. Francois was able to rush for 3-yards, and then a pass to Thomas was incomplete as Francois was hit by Beesley. At the two-minute warning Francois was facing 3rd and 17.
Thomas rushed for 4 yards and the Guardians were forced to punt. The Mac Brown punt was deep, but Akers returned it 18-yards to the San Antonio 22. A 14-yard pass to Nick Holley moved the sticks to the 40-yard line. Then, a 6-yard pass to Fred Brown was followed by a 15-yard pass to Patrick, which moved the markers to the Orlando 40. With 0:36 remaining, Coan passed 34-yards to Holley who was brought down on the Orlando 6-yard line. Jacques Patrick ran the ball the remaining 6 yards for the touchdown. The 1-point conversion attempt drew a flag for defensive pass interference and the Brahmas repeated the try, which was made good with a Patrick 1-yard run.
At half time, the score was 14-10 for Orlando.
San Antonio took the kickoff and Jack Coan started a Brahmas drive on his own 15-yard line. Coan passed to Patrick who made 14-yards. On 3rd down, Coan passed to Travis Toivonen at midfield for a 14-yard gain. On 3rd and 3, Coan passed short to Hilliman who extended the play to a 25-yard gain. On 3rd and 2, Coan had to throw it away. The Brahmas settled for a 29-yard Romo field goal to make the score 14-13 for Orlando.
Dormady started a drive on the Orlando 28 with a 9-yard quarterback sneak. A short 1-yard pass to Rogers was enough to move the chains. After that, the drive stalled and the Guardians punted.
From his own 28-yard line, Coan completed a 6-yard pass to Alize Mack. The Brahmas took a 10-yard penalty which pushed them back. On 3rd and 13, Coan passed down field to a wide open Nick Holley for a 44-yard gain. On 3rd down, Jack Coan passed to Toivonen, who ran 22-yards to score a 28-yard touchdown. The 2-point conversion failed, making the score 19-14 for San Antonio.
The Guardians got the ball on their own 31. Dormady made a first down after a San Antonio penalty and a 6-yard Darrington rush.
At the end of the 3rd quarter San Antonio was ahead 19-14.
Dormady was sacked for a 13-yard loss by Delontae Scott, and the Guardians were forced to punt.
Coan passed to Jacques Patrick for a 13-yard gain, but Patrick coughed up the ball and Maponga recovered the ball for the Guardians.
Dormady tried to drive the ball on the ground with a Darrington 3-yard run, and a Dormady keeper for 5 more yards. Darrington carried the ball 16-yards to move the markers to the San Antonio 38. A pass to Andrew Jamiel was good for 4 more, but that is as far as the drive went. Orlando’s Borregales attempted a 52-yard field goal which was good, making the score 19-17 for San Antonio.
The Orlando kickoff was returned to the San Antonio 24. After almost being picked off, Jack Coan went three and out and the Brahmas punted.
Rogers return put the Guardians deep on their own 6-yard line.
Orlando’s Darrington had a nice 9-yard run, but a holding call brought the Guardians back to the 3-yard line. Dormady passed 8-yards to Carter, and then a roughing the passer call move the chains for the Guardians. Dormady attempted a short pass to Darrington, but the ball was batted down and caught by Beesely who returned the ball 20-yard for a major. The play was challenged by Orlando for defensive holding. The challenge failed and the touchdown stood. The two-point conversion failed, making the score 25-17 for San Antonio.
Eli Rogers returned the kickoff to the Orlando 25-yard line. Deondre Francois came in at quarterback and gained a first down on a pass to Charleston Rambo. Francois handed to Darrington and he broke into open field and ran 59-yards to the San Antonio 4. On 3rd down, Francois was pressured but he still passed complete to Jamiel in the end zone for the touchdown. Francois was hit by Scott and left the field. Dormady was brought in for the 2-point conversion, which failed, making the score 25-23 for San Antonio.
With 3:55 remaining, Orlando kicked off and Fred Brown returned the ball to the San Antonio 40. Jack Coan handed to Jacques Patrick and he ran for 19 yards. He handed to Patrick again, and this time the gain was only 2 yards. At the two-minute warning, San Antonio was 3rd and 6 on the Orlando 37.
A 6-yard pass to Akers gave the Brahmas a first down. San Antonio attempted to run out the clock, as Orlando had only one time out remaining.
San Antonio was able to run out the clock.
The final score was San Antonio Brahmas 25, Orlando Guardians 23.
