Why XFL Roughnecks punter Rehkow was a good signing

Last week, the Indianapolis Colts signed former Houston Roughnecks punter Austin Rehkow to their practice squad. The punter out of Anchorage, Alaska proved his worth in the XFL and may now make an impact in the NFL.

This year, punters and kickers are falling weekly to the COVID list, and nine times out of 10 if a kicker goes to the COVID list so does the punter. It is definitely a great idea to carry an extra specialist.

The Colts’ regular punter is Rigoberto Sanchez, who recently underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor. Sanchez has returned and everything went to plan.

During his tenure as a Roughneck, Rehkow punted the ball 19 times for 788 yards, and an average of 41.5 yards per punt. He also netted 37.4 yards per punt, a punt for a long of 60 yards, and even landed five of his punts inside the 20-yard line, never having a touchback.

It seems XFL punters are just bred differently. So far, any XFL punter that has been given a chance or signed with an XFL team always seems to put up great numbers.

When could we see Rehkow?

Realistically, barring any injury to Sanchez or falling to the COVID list, it may be a while until we get to thee the former Roughneck boot punts in an NFL game. If the Colts win this weekend and make the playoffs, perhaps they could keep Rehkow around longer so they always have a great punter on standby.

How do you remember Rehkow?

What some people may remember about Rehkow the most from would be tossing the Bud Light Seltzer to current New York Jets kicker Sergio Castillo after their win as Roughnecks. Rehkow proved that he is a good punter, and holder both in the XFL with footballs and seltzers.
