Chicago – (16 March 2001) — As the Enforcers prepare to battle the Demons Sunday night at Soldier Field, the spotlight is on the defensive secondary.
The Enforcer pass defense ranks dead last in the league allowing 218.8 yards per game. This was evidenced in the LA game in which Tommy Maddox threw for over 400 yards in a come-from-behind win and this past week’s Memphis game in which Jim Druckenmiller won player of the week honors.
The secondary is going to have to hold against the Demons who throw the ball almost exclusively.
Bad news for that unit includes the fact that mainstays Kerry Cooks and leading tackler Ray Austin are doubtful for this weekend’s game and nickel back Donald McCall is definitely out with a shoulder injury. John Fisher was claimed from waivers to try to shore up the defensive backfield.
The one piece of good news for the Enforcers is that Mike Pawlawski still won’t be returning. Pat Barnes made quite a few mistakes last week and is beginning to show his ineptitude compared to Pawlawski.
What this means is that a hard hitting secondary led by Corey Ivy, Quincy Coleman, Troy Saunders, and Jason Bray will need to worry less about making the “Lugz Hit of the Week” and concentrate on covering deep threats like Travis Moore, Brian Roberson, and Jimmy “The Jet” Cunningham.
