The latest version of the XFL has its first head coach.
In news first reported by CBS6’s Sean Robertson, Virginia State head coach Reggie Barlow has left that position for the XFL. Football Scoop later added that Barlow would become a head coach in the XFL. Late last night, Robertson confirmed Football Scoop’s reporting and added that Barlow would be leading the XFL’s yet-to-be-announced franchise based in San Antonio.
This would be a significant step up the ranks for Barlow, who has 13 years of head coaching experience at the FCS and Division II levels of college football. At Alabama State from 2007-2014, Barlow compiled a 49-42 record. He ended his tenure there with five consecutive winning seasons when his contract was not renewed.
In 2016, he took over the Virginia State program. Barlow’s record there in four years was 34-16 (the team did not play in 2020 due to COVID-19). Virginia State’s record last year was 3-6 overall, 3-4 in the conference. Prior to becoming head coach, Barlow spent two years as Alabama State’s QBs coach, where he was instrumental in developing future NFL QB Tarvaris Jackson. Barlow played in 82 NFL games from 1996-2003 with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Oakland Raiders, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a wide receiver and kick/punt returner.
The XFL has yet to officially announce the hire, or San Antonio as a location for a team in 2023. Stay tuned to XFLBoard.com for more information on this hire as it becomes available.
