ARLINGTON, Texas – August 10, 2024 – The United Football League has announced that John DeFilippo has stepped down as head coach of the Memphis Showboats. The loss of DeFilippo follows the recent departure of General Manager Dennis Polian.

“We are truly grateful for Coach DeFilippo’s contributions to the Memphis Showboats, UFL, and Legacy USFL,” said UFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations, Daryl Johnston. “We wish John all the best in his future endeavors.”

On November 10, 2022, the New Orleans Breakers hired DeFilippo to be their head coach. He led the Breakers to a 4-0 start in the 2023 USFL season, but they dropped their last three games to finish 4-3. In the 2023 USFL South Championship Game, the Birmingham Stallions were the opponents that the Breakers faced after a 7-3 victory. Nevertheless, the Breakers were defeated 47-22, and the Stallions went on to win the title the following week in a game against the Pittsburgh Maulers.

After the USFL and the XFL merged to create the United Football League, DeFilippo was named the Head Coach of the Memphis Showboats. In the 2024 UFL season the Showboats went 2-8 and were shut out of the playoffs.

The league will soon begin their search for a new Memphis Showboats head coach.
