In a move that has sparked enthusiasm among fans, quarterback Jordan Ta’amu has officially signed back with the DC Defenders for the 2025 United Football League (UFL) season. This announcement comes as a significant boost for the Defenders, who are looking to build on their previous successes in spring football leagues.

Originally from Pearl City, Hawaii, Jordan Ta’amu has had a diverse football career since his college days at Ole Miss, where he set numerous school records. After going undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft, Ta’amu’s journey took him through various professional leagues, including stints in the NFL on practice squads with teams like the Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, Detroit Lions, Washington Football Team, Carolina Panthers, and Minnesota Vikings. However, it was his performance in the XFL and USFL where he truly made his mark.

In the XFL, Ta’amu first gained recognition with the 2020 St. Louis BattleHawks before moving to the DC Defenders. His 2023 season with the Defenders was particularly notable, where he led the team to a 9-1 record, earning the XFL’s Offensive Player of the Year award. He threw for 1,878 yards with 14 touchdowns and just three interceptions, showcasing a blend of passing prowess and mobility on the ground.

The Impact on the Defenders

The return of Ta’amu to the DC Defenders is seen as a critical move for the team’s aspirations in the newly formed UFL, which merges the XFL and USFL. Ta’amu’s familiarity with the team’s system, along with his experience and leadership, positions him as a crucial player for the upcoming season. Despite a mixed performance in the 2024 UFL season, where the Defenders did not meet expectations, Ta’amu’s potential to revitalize the team’s offensive strategy is undeniable. His decision-making and understanding of the game have been areas of growth that fans and coaches hope will lead to more consistent play in 2025.

As Ta’amu leads the Defenders, they hope to use his skills in a dynamic air and ground offense. The quarterback’s dual-threat capability aligns well with the evolving strategies in spring football, where versatility is key. The team’s management, including head coach Reggie Barlow and offensive coordinator Fred Kaiss, has expressed optimism about the synergy between Ta’amu and the revamped roster, which includes new acquisitions aimed at bolstering the offensive line and receiving corps.

Challenges and expectations

While Ta’amu’s return is a positive development, it’s not without its challenges. He will need to address the inconsistencies shown in the previous season to meet the high expectations set for him. Moreover, with the UFL aiming to distinguish itself in the landscape of professional football, every team, including the Defenders, will need to perform under increased scrutiny and competition.

For Ta’amu, this season is another step in his journey, potentially another platform to showcase his talent with hopes of catching the eye of NFL scouts once again. His leadership, both on and off the field, will be crucial in rallying the Defenders toward a championship pursuit.

  1. I love Ta’amu being back. I look forward to seeing what 2025 has in store. I think it is always great signing new blood, but I look forward to the stars of the league performing well. I hope it goes that way for Ta’amu in 2025.
With the NFL Transactions that have gone down over the last week, there are quite a bit more players out there that could make the next few weeks interesting. The most notable name on this list to me is Alex McGough who was released by the Packers. Hoping this leads to a signing with Stallions. Tight Ends have been a bit on the light side in the UFL, but I see Tyler Mabry & John Samuel Shenker were released. Mason Brooks & Jerome Carvin, two former Showboats draftees were released which could largely help the Showboats O-Line troubles from last year. Keshawn Banks and Bradlee Anae have been released to help terrorize UFL quarterbacks should they re-sign with the league. Talking of quarterbacks Nathan Peterman, Jake Luton, John Wolford and Logan Woodside are newly free. Would any of these NFL experienced quarterbacks like for an opportunity to go to camp and fight to play? Additionally Myles Gaskin, Joe Gaziano, Equaninmeous St. Brown, Terrell Edmunds, Myles Boykin, Dakoda Shepley, Jacob Kibodi, Trenton Irwin, LaCale London and Jalen Davis are all recently released from NFL teams. Would any of this group test their mettle in the UFL, with the thought process of elevating their stature in the eyes of NFL scouts? Hoping to see at least 2 or 3 of them come this Spring.
