SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – (18 January 2001) – Appropriately, the Demons will be preparing for their 2001 XFL experience by practicing at the foot of Mt. Diablo in the East Bay.
San Francisco’s newest professional football team will get ready for its 10-game regular season by conducting drills on the facilities of Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, it was announced jointly by the community college and the Demons.
“We could not ask for a better situation, for both the Demons and DVC,” vice president and general manager Michael Preacher said. “We will both benefit from this arrangement.”
At the Demons’ disposal will be two facilities, a natural grass field for the minimalization of injuries and another with an artificial surface inside the stadium that would be used in case of inclement weather.
“We are very excited about this agreement,” said Steve Ward, Diablo Valley’s director of athletics. “It will benefit many students on our campus. The Demons have been great to work with and we look forward to a long partnership with them.”
As part of the agreement, the Demons and DVC will conduct a football clinic during the summer and the XFL team will establish an internship program to provide students with athletic administration aspirations an outlet for experiencing activities associated with a professional sports organization.
“We eventually want to add permanent amenities to their physical education complex,” Preacher said, “with the potential for bringing in locker rooms, training rooms and other related facilities. It would be a joint-usage facility.
“And our contribution to the school will not only benefit the football program, but will also be used to provide scholarships for deserving women athletes at DVC,” he added.
The Demons will begin practicing at DVC on Tuesday, January 30, and will hold workouts there three days each week depending on San Francisco’s weekly game schedule. San Francisco is planning to practice weekly at Pacific Bell Park through mid-March and conduct its weekly press conference in conjunction with the workout.
