The D.C. Defenders are facing the 2024 UFL season without star running Abram Smith after he suffered an injury during training camp. On Thursday March 14, 2024, the Defenders placed Smith on the injured reserve list. There is no word on how long Smith will be away from the game.
The exact nature of the injury has not been reported, although there is an indication he may have suffered a torn ACL.
Smith was the XFL’s leading rusher last season and was poised for another strong year with the Defenders. In the 2023 XFL season, Smith carried 157 times for 788 yards and 7 touchdowns, while catching 12 passes for 91 yards. His 5 yards per carry was number one in the league for all backs with 60+ rushing attempts. Due to Smith’s efforts, the Defenders’ running game led them to the XFL Championship game in 2023.
The injury is a big setback for the D.C. squad. Remining in camp for the Defenders are running backs Cam’Ron Harris, Darius Hagans, and Pooka Williams.
The D.C. Defenders first game is on Sunday, March 31 at 12:00 PM (ET) when they visit the San Antonio Brahmas.
