The
Xtreme Take the Field!
In the preseason, the Xtreme was touted as the team to beat, and they lived up to this reputation. Scott Milanovich was initially anticipated to be the star quarterback of the team, but Tommy Maddox unseated him in the preseason. Maddox went on to win XFL Player of the Year.
After losing their season opener to the San Francisco Demons, the Xtreme hosted the winless Chicago Enforcers in Week 2. The game became a shootout, going into double overtime, before the Xtreme emerged victorious 39-32. Kicker Jose Cortez missed several field goals that could have won the game, and the team's frustration was highlighted by a Tommy Maddox sideline tirade. Most of the first half of the game wasn't even broadcast, as an NBC generator ran out of gas! The game ran so long that it delayed the live broadcast of Saturday Night Live, hosted by singer Jennifer Lopez. SNL producer Lorne Michaels was reportedly so upset about the delay that NBC had to make changes to their XFL broadcast scheduling, including cutting away to SNL in the case of another overtime game.
The Xtreme hosted the Memphis Maniax in Week 4, going up against Maniax quarterback Jim Druckenmiller. The weather was miserable, with a constant downpour soaking the already-waterlogged field. The game became one of constant fumbles and mistakes caused by the rain, and the Maniax emerged victorious. But the Xtreme came alive after this loss, and won every subsequent game except another against Memphis!
The Xtreme even steamrolled over undefeated Orlando Rage in Week 7. The team rounded out their regular season with a shutout against San Francisco, 24-0, to end at 7-3.
In the playoffs, the team once again hosted the Chicago Enforcers, but this time handily defeated them in regulation play. The Xtreme hosted the San Francisco Demons in the Championship Game, named the Million Dollar Game. The Demons fell to the victorious Xtreme 38-6, and the Xtreme players split a $1 million jackpot; each player received just over $25,000 each. Quarterback Tommy Maddox was named the game's MVP, and the XFL Player of the Year.
