Update on potential Seattle team name

Post by MikeMitchell »

A Microsoft attorney has moved to trademark the "Seattle Steelheads," one of several names being bandied about as a possible moniker for the region's new NHL hockey franchise. Attorney Craig Farris filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to trademark the name on Dec. 12, public records show

The Steelheads mark is based upon an intent to use in the future. Thus, the mark has yet to be used and in order for the application to be approved, the applicant must file a Statement of Use at some point down the line. Moreover, the mark specifically relates to hockey which would be in conflict with an NHL team.

Most recently, we’ve seen the Las Vegas Golden Knights announced its nickname without securing the federal trademark. It is currently in a battle over the trademark rights to the Golden Knights mark.

The owners for the Seattle NHL franchise have trademarked a bunch of names. They didn't trademark Steelheads but a local fiction writer named Pamela Bowerman trademarked The Seattle Sockeyes. There might be some battle or agreement for the "Sockeyes" name because the NHL team also appears to have attempted to own the trademark to that name.

Through an attorney,Pamela Bowerman has trademarked that name. , her pen name is Jami Davenport. She's supposedly doing it to protect her line of books. She does some sort of romance novel stories, and she has books with the fictional name of the Sockeyes. Supposedly there are fictional hockey players that are characters from that team. She trademarked the name to prevent anyone from forcing her to change all of her books. So she might be receptive to letting those names go but she wants to make sure that she doesn't have to go back and change all of her novels, or that she can still use the name in her future books.

The ownership group for the NHL franchise registered trademarks for 13 potential names last winter, in alphabetical order: Seattle Cougars, Seattle Eagles, Seattle Emeralds, Seattle Evergreens, Seattle Firebirds, Seattle Kraken, Seattle Rainiers, Seattle Renegades, Seattle Sea Lions, Seattle Seals, Seattle Sockeyes, Seattle Totems and Seattle Whales.

The NHL group is reportedly going to be naming their team sometime in the spring. So the group of names above appear to be out of the mix for the XFL. Wolfpack is available, it would appear. Steelheads might be negotiable.

So Steelheads are pretty much out of the loop. Orcas wasn't listed either on the NHL list. I think Orcas would be a pretty good name. The Wolfpack might not be original enough for McMahon with NC State having the name. The Seattle Seawolves have a Orca for their logo, so maybe they'll steer away from Orcas too...
Ready for the team reveals...again
