Deveon Smith
Looking for clarification about his situation and current availability. Was he cut by the Maulers only and is now a free agent that can be picked up by any other team in the USFL or has he also been cut by the league meaning he cannot be signed by any other team and would have to find a different league to play in?

Re: Deveon Smith
This is my educated guess, but I assume he's out of the league at this point. There was an article (can't locate it right now) that mentioned a waiver order when a guy is released, but I'm going to assume given he was cut at the end of March whatever period that would entail has long since passed. Each team has a dedicated practice squad that gets a reduced salary; I'm assuming they're not going to pay someone who's not on a team just to retain their rights.XFLUSFLGUY wrote: ↑Fri Apr 22, 2022 1:06 pm Looking for clarification about his situation and current availability. That being said, if a team specifically wanted him now, I can't see why they couldn't just sign him to a new deal.

On April 4th he tweeted asking USFL teams to pick him up. That doesn't really clear it up one way or another but it's still a wrinkle in the situation.nick1091 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 22, 2022 3:07 pmThis is my educated guess, but I assume he's out of the league at this point. I'm of the opinion that Kirby Wilson and the Maulers wanted to get Madre London once he became available which made Smith expendable. Instead of just cutting him for football reasons, they said it was because he broke team rules to make it seem like Wilson, as a first time HC, means business and won't make exceptions for anybody.
Maybe I'm wrong but that's the impression I get from the situation.

Which as we talked about in last week's thread was stupid, as London has been underwhelming throughout his career (both college and pro), and ELF isn't really much of a barometer. Smith called out the Maulers statement and retweeted Marc Trestman as well as another guy who worked for the Vipers vouching for him. The league unfortunately seems so tied to UBF that while Smith to NJ makes all the sense in the world it probably won't happen.SamTheRam28 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 22, 2022 5:50 pmOn April 4th he tweeted asking USFL teams to pick him up. I do believe a return to the XFL's in his future, and he'll be 28 by the time of kickoff so it's not like he's ancient.
