UFL coaches contracts up... who stays who goes?

Post by 4th&long »

June 30th was supposed to be the close of the year for coaches contracts... with that past... who stays who goes?

My Guess in  categories:

Stays:
Holtz
Nolan
Becht

Unless they are insulted by 2025 $, I see these guys all back

Likely back but not 100%:
CJ Johnson  (the team played hard all season, 2 wins slipped through fingers, CJ 5-5 in 2023)
Wade (age factor)

50-50:
Barlow  (team was not always looking fully committed but still 4-6 not bad)

Probably Gone:
Stoops  (money)
Deflop  (need a new face to generate interest)

SI-MM: Uncertainty Faces UFL 2025 As HC Contracts Expire

Post by 4th&long »

https://www.si.com/fannation/ufl/ufl-ne ... rst-season

>>  UFL coaching contracts for the 2024 season expired on Sunday, June 30. That includes all eight league head coaches, who fall under the UFL's new seasonal employee category. As a result, all team coaches are off the clock and don't technically punch back into work until January 1, 2025.The ultimate catch, however, is whether or not many of these coaches will want to punch back in.On top of that, if a head coach doesn't return, it could greatly affect assistants who are on standby. The entire makeup of a UFL team's coaching staff can change if the lead domino falls. <<

One thing missed here is that this can also be a positive to many coaches.  They are under no obligation for most the summer, fall and year end Holiday season.   Its a 6 month job, unless they want to do some promo work.

Was the USFL already like this?  Holtz worked with NorthWestern Univesity last year all fall, and it did not interfere with his USFL/UFL duties.  Perhaps a good % of coaches like this setup.  We still don't know what the salary is for HC and Assistants, and while it may not be XFL level, its like USFL level.

I posted my list of coaching chances or potential chances in IP - lets see how it goes.

PFT: All UFL head coaches are free agents

Post by 4th&long »

https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootba ... ree-agents

>>  Even if they return, work doesn’t begin until January 1, 2025. They’re basically seasonal employees, paid for part of the year and otherwise not paid, and not employed. It makes it cheaper to employ them. It also gives them the ability to leave, if they want.

The UFL is a single-entity operation, with no team owners. The league does the hiring and the firing. The UFL might not want to bring all of the coaches back. Some of them might want to leave. Here’s the reality. It’s hard to jump to the NFL or college football in July, absent an unexpected opening. While the schedule differences work for players who’d like to make the jump, teams aren’t hiring coaches deep into the offseason.  <<

UFL news on a slow day  - but its true.  We also heard the news of a GM change in Houston - so looks like CJ will be staying which I was thinking.

Called that one... I just think they need a new face to sell this team to Memphis.  Personally like him, but he gets too emotional and caught in minutiae, missing big picture.  Memphis needs a new HC to get fans excited.

>> The Memphis Showboats continue to see big changes ahead of 2025. Head Coach John DeFilippo will not be returning to the franchise next season, multiple sources tell Pro Football Newsroom. Mark Perry of UFL News Hub was the first to break the news.<<

Anthony Becht has confirmed to PFT he's coming back:

Becht plans to (c)ontinue to coach the Battlehawks. He said via text this morning that he doesn’t expect there to be any overlap between his NFL duties and his UFL gig.

That's good to hear. He was one of the coaches in the UFL News Hub article that was apparently upset over the change in contract status/pay and was considering not coming back.

Also, per Mike Mitchell, Wade Phillips was able to sign a two-year contract just before the merger (I'm assuming that was part of the deal for taking over San Antonio) and is, technically, the only coach still under contract. So he'll also be back.

I don't see CJ going.  I think they had issues with personnel and will do better in 2025.  He did pretty well in 2023.

Becht we knew was staying, and the Jets deal was only making it better for him to stay.

But the Wade news is a real shocker... in a Good way!!.   He's Backkkk!

He's already done at least one fan event and attended the Houston Showcase, so I assume he's staying.
