CBS-S: Articles on UFL and related

Post by 4th&long »

CBS Sports website finally seems to be consolidating its Spring FB site, XFL is no longer listed just USFL with UFL news, but they still need to rename it as UFL

PFT an NBC site is definitely covering aspects of the UFL

Why is CBS?  They have the most similar to ESPN website in cbssports.com.  Both leagues avgeraged 630k+ in 2023 and USFL almost 750k in 2022.  Its certainly big enough to cover and they may be keeping their options open too.

Or to use it as a smear machine. CBS was very hostile to the XFL. That's because they were onboard with the AAF, which paid them quite a bit of money for CBS to carry the games. Now CBS is onboard with the CFL. But I don't really think they're that interested in sabotage anymore.

The other possibility is mainly the use of UFL games as betting opportunities (CBS has been using its old 90s-era Web site Sportsline as a betting brand). That was a huge angle that XFL 2020 had.

I haven't see any smears on CBS Sports.com for either USFL, XFL in 2022, 2023.  I think they just cover sports and UFL, while not a highly maintained subsite does qualify for one in their eye.

>>  Battlehawks are the face of spring football
St. Louis has yet to hoist the ultimate trophy since its 2020 return to pro ball as part of the XFL, but the Battlehawks are quickly confirming themselves as the contemporary face of the spring gridiron. A year after easily boasting the best attendance marks of the revived XFL, the Anthony Becht-led squad drew more than 40,000 at Saturday's home opener against the Arlington Renegades, a 27-24 thriller capped by a game-winning field goal.

Showboats struggling with Memphis market
UFL executive Daryl Johnston admitted while attending the Showboats' Saturday home opener that Memphis is drawing fewer fans than other teams: "It's not what we want it to be," he told the Commercial Appeal, citing a "low" turnout for Week 2 and revealing that UFL leaders are "already working on 2025" plans to build interest in the club.

McCarron among QBs bound to draw NFL interest
Stop us if you've heard this before, but A.J. McCarron might be playing his way back into the NFL. <<

CBS-S: NFL teams take notice: UFL's Jake Bates 62yd FG

Post by 4th&long »

https://www.cbssports.com/ufl/news/nfl- ... king-feat/

>>  Jake Bates has only been a UFL kicker for two weeks and in that short time, he's already pulled off a feat that's only been accomplished one time in the 104-year history of the NFL. After hitting an improbable 64-yard field goal for the Michigan Panthers during the team's opener last week, Bates followed that up by hitting ANOTHER field goal from beyond 60 yards in Week 2. With two seconds to go until halftime, the Panthers were sitting at Birmingham's 44-yard line and at that point, Michigan coach Mike Nolan had two options: Attempt a Hail Mary or send Bates out for a 62-yard field goal attempt.  <<

CBS-S: UFL coach accuses NFL teams of breaking rule

Post by 4th&long »

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/ufl- ... o-do-that/

>>  According to Panthers head coach Mike Nolan, several NFL teams have tried to contact Bates, which is a problem, because it's against the rules for an NFL team to contact a UFL player during the season. "Outsiders don't touch our players too much during the season," Nolan said Tuesday, via the Detroit Free Press. "With Jake, somehow some of them are trying to make efforts to do that, to be honest with you, and hopefully that backs off a little bit because that's not -- they're not supposed to do that. And maybe that's rumor, but I had heard something the other day and I kind of said, 'Well, let's make sure we nip that in the bud,' because, look, I want Jake to do well and I want him to get a chance."NFL teams are allowed to contact the team about Bates, but they aren't allowed to have direct contact with the player. If anyone in the UFL knows the rules about who NFL teams are allowed to have contact with, it's definitely Nolan, who has 33 years of NFL coaching experience under his belt, including a five-season stint as the 49ers' head coach. <<

UFL needs to hold firm, NFL seems on board.
