It doesn't, really; team rosters are locked once their season has ended and teams cannot technically sign players until the new league year starts (I believe March 13 this year). So these players are signed to "futures" contracts, meaning they will be on the team's 90-man off-season roster once the new league year begins, in the "future."

But I don't think there is any $$$ paid during the futures contract, its only once they ake the final 53 man Roster or PS during the season, though I'm sure they get some comp during active camps as well.
