USFL-XFL merger is expected to be announced today
>> James Larsen@JamesLarsenPFN
Developing: The #USFL-#XFL merger is expected to be announced today, per sources.
There is an event this morning in San Antonio to launch a "Lone Star" club for Brahmas season ticket holders, and merger news could come alongside with it, barring any last minute changes.
Sources indicate that the new league will be named the United Football League (#UFL). Hearing that the format for 2024 will only feature 8 teams, TBD.
Nothing is set in stone until the leagues make it official.

SBJ: USFL-XFL merger approved few other details released
https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/A ... Source=sbd
>> Federal antitrust regulators have cleared the proposed merger of the USFL and XFL spring football leagues, and the parties say they intend to launch a 2024 season as a combined entity on March 30.
“We are pleased to have completed the antitrust review process in connection with the proposed merger of the XFL and USFL and intend to play a combined season this spring kicking off on Saturday, March 30,” the parties said in a statement. “We are now finalizing terms of the definitive agreement and will share more about this new League in the coming weeks.”
Little is known about the structure of the combined entity. Details like its name, surviving markets and teams, broadcast rights deals and player employment terms are still in development. However, a source said XFL CEO Russ Brandon will be the top executive of the combined league. Since the merger was announced, XFL executives Marc Ross and Jay Rothman both left the league.<<

Re: USFL-XFL merger is expected to be announced today
Something happened that day and it wasn't an announcement. I mean the fact the approval was given was leaked but no "announcement" was given, and certainly nothing was said in San Antonio. Every time a certain reporter tries to put out breaking news his "sources" seem to let him down.
Let that sink in.
Figure it out. The sources are not great.

Initial thoughts on a still developing story.
I get the why for the merger in terms of getting stronger for long term viability. Both leagues have struggled to thrive in the marketplace. They have each sought investment money.
But it’s challenging to get excited about this merged league when the space is losing teams. And people will be losing jobs. We had it great in 2023 with 16 American pro football teams playing in the NFL offseason:
I am also not a fan of losing the USFL or XFL brand. If it were me, this merger would look a lot different. But it’s not my money.<<

The Rock posted about the merger on his Instagram yesterday. Seems the idea that him and Dany would walk away were flat out wrong. Daryl Johnston, on the other hand, has been silent the past few months. It wouldn't surprise me if he was given the pink slip and XFL upper management is basically running the show.

DJ is FB operations not the front office. He's also seasonal. NewsHub rumor was he may be staying in that capacity. They need a full time Sports/FB Business man. So it makes sense to go with Russ. The Rock is the front man and looks to be staying so. Or at least till the ink dries.laxtreme56 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 04, 2023 9:13 am The Rock posted about the merger on his Instagram yesterday.
