Re: XFL, USFL in “advanced” merger talks
I would guess the teams most at risk of not joining the combined league would be the ones that currently don't have stadium venues (whichever teams play in away hubs in the USFL, and Vegas in the XFL). I'm not sure what other considerations would go into eliminating teams that play in home stadiums (travel distance from the rest of the league? cost of rent? merch/attendance numbers from the previous season?).

There's some scuttlebutt of a relocation of the Sea Dragons due to distance from everyone else.GregParks wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 1:12 pm I would guess the teams most at risk of not joining the combined league would be the ones that currently don't have stadium venues (whichever teams play in away hubs in the USFL, and Vegas in the XFL). One one hand, I understand, but on the other hand, best case scenario, you'd like to have as much of the country covered as possible to potentially gain the greatest amount of interest in the league.GDAWG wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 1:25 pmThere's some scuttlebutt of a relocation of the Sea Dragons due to distance from everyone else.GregParks wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 1:12 pm I would guess the teams most at risk of not joining the combined league would be the ones that currently don't have stadium venues (whichever teams play in away hubs in the USFL, and Vegas in the XFL). This news could also be the reason why the XFL hasn't officially confirmed the October 4th draft date.

Which goes back to one of my previous posts, wondering whether or not this potential merger was even discussed at the big league-wide meeting at the Combine (where Houston DPP Marc Lillibridge mentioned the 10/4 draft date).
Also, last year's draft wasn't officially announced by the league until five days before it took place. So perhaps one has nothing to do with the other...

Mike Mitchell was on The XFL Insider Podcast posted today:
https://xflboard.com/news/live-episode- ... -tha-king/
He's also on the Markcast live right now. Not a lot new except he noted this whole thing started when league personnel men from the USFL and XFL began talking, unofficially, about working together, and each took the idea to their higher-ups in the league office. Both leagues seemed willing to talk and here we are.
He also thought it could be a merger where the leagues work together in some capacity but stay separate entities - same season, championship game against each other, something like that. I really doubt that if only because unless they share resources, it doesn't solve the problems of (a) easing the financial burden of ownership or (b) creating new revenue streams in the same way that combining into one entity could potentially do.
