While I am one of those who don't care either way about mascots or cheerleaders in professional sports, I am one of those who think that mascots and cheerleaders are something that the XFL won't have, to distinguish themselves from the USFL, who have mascots and (I think the teams with actual homes) have cheerleaders. However, mascots and cheerleaders are an example of going out there and promoting teams within the various communities and the XFL could use them while the players are practicing in the Arlington hubs during the week. I still can't see it happening though.
Right now in the NFL, there are only 4 NFL teams without official mascots: Chargers, Jets, Giants and Packers, although unofficially, the Chargers have used an actual dog as an unofficial mascot. There are 8 NFL teams without actual cheerleaders: the four mentioned without mascots and Bills, Bears, Steelers and Browns.
While I don't think either of these are going to happen, if one of the XFL announcements from the combine is that they are going to have mascots and/or cheerleaders to help drive community engagement during the 2024 season, I would be fine with it.

I think there are much better ways to create home market engagement other than mascots and cheerleaders. Somewhere, someone mentioned team ambassadors for example. Regardless, 2022’s local marketing effort was so pathetic that anything can’t help but be an improvement.

If the XFL is smart, make team ambassadors to each XFL team like legendary local sports figures. Having said that, the XFL won't do that and would have like Deestroying for Orlando (since he lives in Florida), Dude Perfect for Arlington or some Tik Tokers in other cities most of us have never heard of.Firecop wrote: ↑Sat Jul 22, 2023 11:14 pm I think there are much better ways to create home market engagement other than mascots and cheerleaders. Your thought is sound, someone like Steve Largent in Seattle for example. Largent did light the torch in the 2020 Seattle home opener. i’m sure each city has a similar type persona that would make a wonderful ambassador.

i realize it is not an apples to apples comparison, but the cardinals mascot is a really big deal here, he has a tv show, instagram followers, and is essentially a local celebrity

That’s cool that it works for the Cardinals but likely wouldn’t work everywhere. I do love the local ambassador idea though!
