Re: CFL U.S. rights go to... CBS Sports Network
You're just assuming that new U.S. audience of anywhere from 500K-1M is right there waiting (it's never been there before), good luck with that--while the total reach of the XFL easily clears a mil yet they're headed for their third death. OK....................................
I've been trying to hammer it into Mr. USFL for the last year or so but he doesn't take so I guess I'll have to with you too, the CFL was on NBC(SN) for two years and it wasn't promoted by Mr. PFT, so what makes you think it's gonna be any different ten years later? What, you think that Jim Rome or somebody's going to push it? There's more of a chance of Buck and Aikman doing the XFLCG in two weeks
You'll get the same CBSSN promos that air during CBS events (mostly PGA) in the summer, nothing more. What you think that they're gonna have Nessler and Danielson do a game the way NBC had Enberg and Olsen during the NFL strike in '82?
Oh and you should have said Fire Country instead, since it's filmed outside of Vancouver, your level of knowledge of CBS primetime programming notwithstanding.

Nothing on CBSSN gets 500k+ viewers. CBS won't even pay for the network to be Nielsen rated, which shows just how much they think of their sports channel. Good for the CFL to make a buck, but unless there's a lucrative streaming deal, this isn't really a stepup. I am looking forward to the inevitable AFL, CFL, IFL triple header in the summer of 24 though

I know what transpired in the past with other US networks. The Football landscape is changing from 10 years ago because of of LEGAL Gambling in the US that the SCOTUS struck down old laws that made it illegal several years ago. Every US State is now jumping on board, TV Networks are getting in on the action, People gamble on pro football more than any other sport including the CFL. CBS doesn't want to get left behind in the Football wars, so they too want to get into the action and are investing in a ready made league with a long established history that won't fold.MGB01 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 29, 2023 2:27 am You're just assuming that new U.S. audience of anywhere from 500K-1M is right there waiting (it's never been there before), good luck with that--while the total reach of the XFL easily clears a mil yet they're headed for their third death. Jim Rome? LOL! That overrated hack has no cred after the way he was crying for mercy at the feet of Jim Everett decades ago. The CFL isn't asking for the whole CBS sport treatment, just a little promotion, score announcements on TV and radio play, anything more than the neglected treatment from ESPN.
No more free lunch for the Mouse, if it wants the other CFL games, it will have to pay for the rights now. A million dollars instead of the paltry $200,000 is better for the CFL revenue stream. That's good business sense. Genius Sports is shopping those other games to other platforms or networks as we speak. Be patient and give the league and GS time to broker a deal for the remaining games
I don't watch any CBS programs since all CBS shows are scattered on various Canadian networks like CTV, Global, City, etc. I can't keep track of who has what show

Ugh. As a fan, I don’t like this at all. I assume I get CBS sports network but I’ve never actually watched it. It was so nice having every game in one spot last year and being able to watch whenever I wanted without having to record them.
Hopefully, this relationship will work out for the league and they’ll find a good home for the remaining games.

Ah, you made the same mistake Bill Hambrecht did in 2012: confused CBS Sports, the arm of the CBS television network, and "CBS Sports Network," a network built on paid programming, a few talk shows and leftover content that doesn't do well enough in the ratings to justify carrying it over the air.DavedaHammer wrote: ↑Thu Apr 27, 2023 11:57 pmIs the CBS "desperate" if it wants to build up it's sport network with a more established league than those of one and done XFL/USFL leagues with poor ratings and attendance figures. There could be more cross promotion with other CBS vehicles like it's regular TV shows on Paramount +, Nickelodeon "NCIS", Young Sheldon", "The Rookie" starring Edmonton native Nathan Fillion. Not to mention support from it's NFL broadcast partner like Brown, Romo, Nantz or Calgary born Nate Burleson. It a new venture with CBS than whatever ABC/ESPN/Disney did with the CFLjohnnyangryfuzzball wrote: ↑Thu Apr 27, 2023 10:32 pm https://awfulannouncing.com/cbs/cfl-cbs ... -2023.html
34 of the league's games will end up on CBS Sports Network, which doesn't register in the Nielsens. The other 52, as of now, will be blacked out in America as CBS still owns the rights but hasn't found a place to put them (and you know they won't be putting them on the linear network... probably Paramount+ or, if we're really lucky, CBS Sports HQ, though I doubt it).
Odd. The only thing I can think is that CBS was desperate after Fox created the USFL (which NBC also staked) and ESPN staked the XFL.
CBS has NEVER built CBS Sports Network into anything meaningful. It has no reason to do so as long as motorsports promoters continue buying time on the network. I have never seen any meaningful promotion of that network—other than the talk shows—on any CBS property I've seen.
This is what the industry knows as "catch and kill." Buy a property, and bury it so no other entity can claim rights.
Randy Ambroisie is a fool for taking this deal.

Heh, the highlight of 2012 UFL had to be Paul Pelosi pledging that yes, in fact the players would be paid (what a guy!), and then two weeks later that's it--with Howard David's sendoff sounding an an awful lot like Scott Hudson on WCW Worldwide (which ended up being the final WCW program broadcast).
CBSSN didn't get a sudden uptick in viewers the year they had Ohio State playing Navy in Baltimore, even with Lundquist/Danielson on the game (while CBS aired their final US Open), so good luck getting it here. I can just see the promotion of the Labour Day classic when CBS has the PGA playoffs (which for the first time will be in full) in August. Or maybe he thinks, with the likelihood of FOX, ABC, and NBC all having games on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend that CBS will pick up Winnipeg/Saskatchewan on 9/3. Hey, he apparently gets to do everything else around here so he can dream too

Randy Ambroisie is a fool for taking this deal.
Randy is being business smart by dividing the CFL game package like what the NHL did with their games on TBS and ESPN. getting a million dollars for those 37 games is a win. It's more than what ESPN paid to the CFL when they had the broadcast rights which was $200,000 a year.
Streaming live sports wasn't a thing in 2012. It is now. CBS has Paramount+ that stream live games on it streaming platform. Paramount+ has more subscribers than ESPN+. It's more likely that CBS will simulcast CFL games there along with CBS Sport Network. Again another win for the CFL.
Be sure to subscribe to CBS Sports Network and Paramount+ and for the other platform that has the other CFL games

Reply to me if you're going to talk about me instead of being a gossiping little school girl.MGB01 wrote: ↑Wed May 03, 2023 2:00 pm Heh, the highlight of 2012 UFL had to be Paul Pelosi pledging that yes, in fact the players would be paid (what a guy!), and then two weeks later that's it--with Howard David's sendoff sounding an an awful lot like Scott Hudson on WCW Worldwide (which ended up being the final WCW program broadcast).

Of course CBSSN didn't get amore viewers for the Ohio State and Navy game because the Buckeyes were playing scrubs like Navy. Everybody was going to know th results of that game.
If there are scheduling conflicts, CBS will move those CFL games to Paramount+. Need I remind you that Paramount+ has more subscribers than ESPN+.
This isn't a dream on my part, it's reality going forward
