NFL Practice Squad/Futures Contract Tracker 2023

Post by GregParks »

This is, believe it or not, the fourth year I've done this. I think this is the most relevant it's been, however, simply because there are now two leagues that will be interested in these players. Those signed to the USFL and XFL from this list will represent the highest quality of player in that league.

As a refresher: These are the players who ended the season on each non-playoff team's practice squad (I'll add the playoff teams as they're eliminated). Teams can begin signing players to futures contracts the day after the end of their season - after a week, practice squad contracts expire and players not signed to futures deals become free agents. The names in bold will be those signed to futures deals with that team. Sometimes teams will sign other street free agents to futures contracts too; I'll include them as well. If a player's practice squad contract expires with one team and they end up signing with another, I'll note that. Some players will sign futures deals with teams still in the playoffs; those will be reflected here once that team's season ends. This will be updated daily as transactions come across the wire.

You can see how many players from last year's list ended up in the USFL in 2022 and/or were drafted by XFL teams in preparation for 2023: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4227

You know one thing these leagues have done for the NFL is certainly made teams a hell of a lot smarter the way they do futures signings. Even 5-10 years ago your average signing was maybe there through the draft, maybe minicamp, and that was it.

Not that they've all become Pro Bowlers, as one self-appointed guru on ArenaFan (those who post there know who I'm talking about) seems to use as his criteria, but you do need 53/55 (or, as we've seen, possibly up to 75 or 80 and even beyond). There's a few in the playoffs that were futures signings last year, and a few years ago would have been picked off because, while it's not NFL money, the track record of these guys making it through the offseason wasn't good, and two words: game tape.

--Seattle led the way with Mike Jackson, who had a handful of appearances to his name in three years, becoming a 17-game starter, with an interception and a fumble recovery. Myles Adams had a strong preseason and worked his way into the rotation. Cade Johnson, one of the top 2021 UDFAs, had a rough preseason and his star diminished, but kept working and got called up, and had a pair of big catches yesterday.

--Quintin Morris helped the Bills when Dawson Knox was out and had a career-best three catches (on five targets) for 39 yards against the Steelers, as well as a touchdown against the Dolphins.

--"The Scottish Hammer" Jamie Gillan was released by the Browns towards the end of the 2021 season and ultimately made his way to the Giants and averaged 46.8 per punt.

--Drue Chrisman replaced Kevin Huber as the Bengals punter in December and on 28 punts put nearly half of them (13) inside the 20.

--Justin Watson, who's always been good for some big plays during his career, was grabbed by the Chiefs and has helped replace Tyreek Hill, to the tune of 21 yards per catch--also in the top 20 in yards per target (9.26, mininum 30).

--Christian Elliss, who I was high on during the FCS spring season two years ago (his teammate Tre Walker was drafted by the Sea Dragons), has spent much of the last two years doing the roster dance but has found a home with the Eagles on special teams.

The good thing is, while these players have "moved on", that opens up the next group. Plus it's always a reassurance that, yes there are actual football people that work for the league--which was one of the lazy media narratives from XFL1.0 and has no doubt not entirely died off.

If the Rams do not keep Case Cookus and the Lions do not keep Steven Montez, it seems likely that they will go back to their spring football teams. I have said that I believe that the reason that the Philadelphia Stars are very quiet at the QB position is because they believe that either Cookus or KJ Costello (or even both) will return. They have one QB on their roster at this point.

After nearly a week of practice squad/futures signings, here's where we stand:

Of the 15 drafted XFL players who were on practice squads of non-playoff teams, eight have signed futures deals while seven have not. Will be interesting to see how many of those seven end up in XFL training camps in the coming weeks.

Updated following this weekend's divisional round games. So far, two players have been signed by the XFL already who were not offered futures contracts: OT Sage Doxtater (Roughnecks) and DE Trent Harris (Defenders). I believe the USFL has signed one as well in QB Davis Cheek. If anyone who follows the league closer than I do knows if they've signed others from the above list, let me know.

Mike Glennon and Ryan Griffin seem unlikely for XFL and USFL. If anything, Griffin will probably be brought back by the Buccaneers, if not as a player, maybe as a coach, since he (and Blaine Gabbert) reportedly taught Tom Brady the Bruce Arians Offense.

For some reason that reminds me of Todd Collins as the Redskins' backup in the mid-2000s telling Mark Brunell it takes a couple years to learn Joe Gibbs' offense, to which Brunell replied "Hey I don't have a couple years"

The more hilarious: Brunell was there two years before Collins showed up (came in and left with Gibbs).

Less funny for those of us who had to watch Brunell play in Washington and piss away a championship caliber defense.

Two more players that ended the season on practice squads are now in the XFL:

-LB Tim Ward of the Packers signed with the Roughnecks yesterday
-G Kahlil McKenzie of the Ravens signed with the Vipers

That brings the total to four

Looks like Davis Webb won't be an option to play in the XFL or USFL. He's looking into getting into coaching.
