Clock changes to speed up game?

Post by MarkNelson »

USFL RULES UPDATE: In order to maximize fan enjoyment and keep games under 3 hours, during the 1st and 3rd quarters we're moving to a running clock after an incomplete pass.

No joke. 😀

XFL 1.0 did this after the week 2 fiasco that delayed SNL by a half hour. I understand where they're coming from, but let's not say it's to improve fan enjoyment, it's to keep it from bleeding into other network programming.

True - they said they wanted to be 3hours for network requirement.

But let's face it Millennial/Gen Z is looking for 2.5-3hr games. So it is for "their" enjoyment and appeal to that demo.

I was surprised Fox didn't try harder to shorten the games in the first place. Affiliates really hate it when sports programming spills over into shows they've sold local ad time for.

Keep the clock running in every quarter except the last 2 minutes of each half.
Cut down to two time outs per half.
Don't stop the clock after a kickoff.
They don't need to stop the clock to move the chains; they shouldn't even need the chains with the chipped ball.
Replace some yardage penalties with loss-of-down penalties and get the ball in play faster.
Shorten halftime, except when Birmingham's playing and there's actually people in the stands.
NO TV TIMEOUTS. There's plenty of 15-second commercials online nowadays, run those instead.
30-second clock runoff when there's an injury. No more fake injuries trying to stop the clock.

Up next: first quarter is only 12 minutes. (This actually happened once.)

What a joke, sabotage thy name is FOX. I'll bet Bryan Scott is real happy that he blew out his knee for games that as it turned out don't mean anything.

Only game that really drug was Mich/NJ, cause it had like four or five injuries at the end. What we gonna do now, bring back the Karen (Pam Ward) from the bowl game that complained about Vinny Curry being injured?

I do expect a lot from XFL3.0 now, after all the free lessons they're received in what not to do.
