Cross Chad Kelly’s name off of any potential USFL qb list for 2022. He was at the top of my list as far as qb’s I wanted to see play in the USFL this spring, but at least he will get another chance to prove himself, this time in the CFL.
It sure seems like a missed opportunity for the USFL to add his talent and name to their league as he expressed enthusiasm for the USFL last year. Evidently they couldn’t get together, or they weren’t ever as close to a deal as it seemed. Perhaps the interest, and potentially bigger paycheck from a more established league was too much to pass up.

The CFL will need to open up the checkbook more due to the USFL and likely XFL in 2023. The USFL won't over pay - and recall the USFL is a 10 game season, CFL is 18, so all things being equal CFL should be paying more. The pluses for the USFL is its American style FB, its a shorter time commitment and allows you to sign with the NFL after the season. Chad probably felt a bird in hand is better than 2 in the bush. It was likely a really big check.Gopher123 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 11, 2022 12:13 am https://cflnewshub.com/cfl-news/qb-chad ... the-argos/

Also the CFL moved in prior to the USFL draft in 10 days.

I think in the case of QB's "overpay" is relative. It's obviously cleaner finance wise to pay every position the same salary like USFL is doing and AAF did (well, attempted to do), but QB play is pivotal and there's not the surplus of talent you have at other positions. I'll be curious if the XFL offers the same type of "premium" contracts for QB's as they did their last iteration (in a land where cash is king it'd be one of the few advantages they currently have at their disposal), but they seem to be dragging their feet at any kind of announcements, as usual.

Could be pay, could be a combination of things. My guess would also be he wants to go to a league that’s known to be a stable league where us alt leagues haven’t been getting past 1 yearnick1091 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 11, 2022 12:17 pmOr he was waiting to find out the USFL salary structure before he committed.4th&long wrote: ↑Fri Feb 11, 2022 9:15 amThe CFL will need to open up the checkbook more due to the USFL and likely XFL in 2023. Yes Over pay is relative but USFL is on a budget. BUT we do not know if QBs are getting the same salaries as all players.nick1091 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 11, 2022 12:17 pmOr he was waiting to find out the USFL salary structure before he committed.4th&long wrote: ↑Fri Feb 11, 2022 9:15 amThe CFL will need to open up the checkbook more due to the USFL and likely XFL in 2023. Re: Chad Kelly To CFL’s Argos
I would expect the XFL might have to pay more for qbs, especially with the USFL now on the scene. Because the USFL is probably not going to overpay, they will get many of the bargain qbs this year. The XFL will have to try and then entice some back to their league and pay would be a big factor, I would think. I would imagine the XFL will want to have more recognizable, bigger names just because of their grand plans for the league. So they could spend considerably more in this area than the USFL.
XFL 2.0 had varying degrees of success with their original 8 designated qbs. Ta’amu, L Jones, Walker, and Perez all had reasonable success and were starters when the league shut down. C Jones had a decent few games before having a few bad ones. IMO he would have gotten back on the field had the season continued. McGloin, Murray, and Silvers didn’t produce the results I’m sure the XFL had hoped. Daniels and Cornelius were pleasant surprises though.
There’s always going to be hits, misses, and surprises. Because of this unknown it’s important for these leagues to not go too crazy right away with big pay but they need to offer enough to get a fairly deep qb pool. Many of the names above had experience going in and still struggled at times. This is where the USFL needs to be careful with not being too cheap on the qb front. They need good players to provide quality play for all 8 teams plus enough depth so others can step in when needed and still play quality football. It will be interesting to see if the USFL wavers from their budget minded approach while securing qbs.

The CFL does pay good money for quarterbacks, maybe not as much for a backup, but Swag Kelly will easily be making six figures, which I KNOW for a fact is more than Brian Woods is willing or able to pay.

You'll probably see people like Perez, and maybe even known Woods loyalist Zach Mettenberger, show up in the USFL.Gopher123 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 12, 2022 9:39 am I would expect the XFL might have to pay more for qbs, especially with the USFL now on the scene. When you're talking about landing quarterbacks, the XFL model was a good one. You mix a few recognizable college stars and proven NFL backups, along with up-and-comers who haven't had much of a chance to prove themselves. That way, fans are drawn in by the bigger name, see a guy like Landry Jones who was Big Ben's backup, and Jordan Ta'amu is holding his own against the guy. Or you see a guy like Luis Perez come out of the AAF and beat out Matt McGloin, who had some brief success in the NFL, for a starting spot.
The goal isn't necessarily to beat out the NFL or CFL for players; it's about building a brand. Use the big names as fan bait, and get your unknowns to stay with you for years and build their careers. The CFL has done a really good job with that strategy.

I think a safe bet for a guy to fill the Landry Jones role will be Ryan mallett. He played decent in TSL but is a known name due to his long nfl experience. Other than him idk any vets they could be going for. Also we know they’re after Ta’amu so that’d be another bigger namejohnnyangryfuzzball wrote: ↑Sat Feb 12, 2022 11:56 amYou'll probably see people like Perez, and maybe even known Woods loyalist Zach Mettenberger, show up in the USFL.Gopher123 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 12, 2022 9:39 am I would expect the XFL might have to pay more for qbs, especially with the USFL now on the scene.
