As the XFL gets set for its reboot later this week, multiple teams agreed to local radio partnerships, but the St. Louis Battlehawks won’t be one of them. According to Dan Caesar of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the city’s new pro-football franchise will instead feature live coverage on social media channels.
“What we decided to do is follow the lead of the fans and do what they asked us,” team president Kurt Hunzeker said. “We’ve gone out with a pretty robust grass-roots strategy talking to fans, and more importantly actively listening to what they say. What we’ve learned over the last six months (is this) is the way they consume sports media now.”
Fans have access to live game coverage through the XFL’s partnerships with five major TV networks. Games are carried by ABC, FOX, ESPN, ESPN2 and FS1, each network will also digitally stream the telecasts.
Without a committed radio partnership, it gives the Battlehawks flexibility in allowing their players and coaches to speak with multiple media outlets, rather than just one station. The team values the ability to promote their product on sports, news and music stations, inviting them to broadcast on gameday from the stadium’s designated “Radio Row” area.
The Battlehawks did, however, stock up their in-stadium coverage, with popular local voices that include Tony Patrico of 105.7 The Point , 101 ESPN’s Michelle Smallmon and Meghan O from HOT 104.1. Patrico will work as the team’s DJ, with Smallmon and Meghan O both contributing as in-game hosts. The PA announcer for Missouri football, Randy Moehlman will fill the same role for the Battlehawks.

They got a great in game team. Most know Patrico for several years did the DJing for the Blues. He left after the Cup win because the long season was to much time away from home. 5 games is easier. Smallmon is very valuable. She been on 101 ESPN afternoon show in St. Louis and very knowledgeable. She could easily been the in house pregame talking about the game itself in match ups and ext I think like we see at Blues games.
