XFL delays draft until early Nov

Post by 4th&long »

https://xflnewshub.com/xfl-news/xfl-dra ... _article=1

>> In an unpublicized shift, the XFL’s tentative draft, originally scheduled for October 4th, has been moved to early November. Sources close to the league attribute this postponement to ongoing merger discussions between the XFL and USFL. Here, we break down what this schedule change could signify for the two spring football leagues.

While the XFL never formally announced the draft date, insiders say Directors of Player Personnel (DPPs) for the league’s teams had Wednesday, October 4th marked on their calendars. The abrupt change in the timeline raises eyebrows and prompts questions about the motives behind it.

The USFL recently put out a statement about their players, indicating that more than 80 who have not re-signed for the 2023 season will become free agents starting October 1. Does the draft delay give XFL coaches a window to assess these free agents? It’s worth noting that while the USFL continues to sign players, the XFL has remained relatively quiet on this front.<<

2020 Draft was mid-October 2019 (when the NFL season ended two weeks earlier than it does now)
2023 Draft was mid-November 2022

I don't know where the idea that there would be an early October draft came from because the XFL has never had, nor needed to have, their draft this early.

In the XFL’s Combine behind the scenes video, Houston DPP Marc Lillibridge mentioned in a conversation that the draft would be October 4th.

Makes sense.

USFL and XFL both did a rookie draft and drafted a lot of the same players.

Probably gonna try to poach players here too.

Would rather a United front drafting the same players but to a league with more press coverage and more financial wealth

As long as they have quality players when they arrive at camp it really doesn't matter how they get from here to there during this period especially. If they drop 4-8 teams (likely 6) that's a huge pool of available players from 2023... plus NFL camp releases and PS drop offs come Jan.

Mike Mitchell said on the Markcast that the pool of players from teams that have folded would be a boon to the CFL and the Indoor Leagues.

He means the ones that don't stay with the merged league... of course. Sure those leagues would now have more players available but the best will be retained in XFL-USFL merged league.

I can always count on you to set the record straight, Greg. Thanks again. 👍
