The PRIZE... TV Money

Post by 4th&long »

If this Dogs--t can get $60mm a year we know the USXFL most certainly can.

https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/ ... me-scripps

>> The deal is worth $240 million to the league over four years, according to ESPN sources, a massive increase from the three-year $4.5m agreement that was previously in place with CBS. <<

But gotta give them credit as they got a sizeable and longterm pay deal.

I know ratings are up, though I wonder how the writers/actors strike impacted sports... we'll know more next year.

This is what the USXFL is looking to do and a combined league spring FB with strong backing and a short but growing history can deliver.

MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, ESPN/ABC must really miss MLS  But credit to NWSL for milking Megan Rapinoe's retirement for all they could get.

Talk about a wasted purchase though, they won't ever air the championship as it would cut into their college football windows. It works on CBS since theirs is more like ABC before 2006 with the main 3:30 game, and occasional noon and prime time games around it.

NWSL championship ratings

Post by 4th&long »

https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2023/1 ... iewership/

>>Saturday’s NJ/NY-OL Reign NWSL Championship Game averaged a 0.42 rating and 817,000 viewers on CBS, down 19% in ratings and 11% in viewership from Portland-Kansas City last year (0.52, 915K), but still the league’s second-largest audience on record.<<

The just signed a $60mm yr TV contract.

The XFL playoffs and championship:
Semifinal #1: 675k
Semifinal #2: 478k
Championship: 1,436k
Avg: 863k

The USFL playoffs and championship:
Semifinal #1: 957k
Semifinal #2: 852k
Championship: 1,57k
Avg: 989k

Each league independently averaged more viewers in their 3 playoffs than the NWSL championship... what is USXFL TV contract worth in 2024?

Eh, it's not really an apples to apples comparison. NWSL teams play a 22 game schedule, have smaller rosters, and a younger more vibrant fan base than the USFL, and similar to the XFL. The Paramount+ numbers weren't included, but said to be an all time high as well. Also, while not ratings related, both San Diego and Angel City (LA) averaged 20k fans per game. Only the Battlehawks outdrew those teams. If I'm a potential sponsor, there seems to be more upside in women's soccer as opposed to spring football right now.

I'm talking about a TV/Video contract - the fans in stands are irrelevant for TV Contract $. The XFL avg all yr 634k and USFL 631k across 43 games each. XFL/USFL viewership doesnt include streaming numbers either.
