Skip Holtz to Northwestern?

Veteran coach Dave Wannstedt declined an opportunity to work with the Northwestern football program this season, he shared with the Mully & Haugh Show on Thursday. That role is expected to go to veteran college head coach Skip Holtz, sources told 670 The Score’s Mike Mulligan.
(Interestingly the article describes Holtz as a "veteran college head coach" and not the "two-time USFL champion head coach of the Birmingham Stallions," which doesn't get mentioned at all.

Dave W is smart to stay clear of that University.
I like Skip Holtz alot and going back to FBS is fine... but Northwestern is a shitshow on many levels and with Fitzgerald gone its not turning around possibly for a very long time. Of course they could be offering a ton of money but Skip deserves better than that CF school.

Even before this mess, NU has been garbage the last few years (and that's with a 7-2 shortened season and a surprise B1G champ game three years ago). They would have kept Fitzgerald if this hadn't happened cause he was probably the only person that would stay there. Plus with this taking effect after the season, that means Holtz is in the unusual in-waiting position during the season while the Stallions are out looking for a new coach or, if NU doesn't offer it until then, they're scrambling for a new coach just weeks before camp.
Right now NU's even more hopeless than South Carolina was when his dad went back in the late 90s. I'm sure the potential for turnaround's appealing, but South Carolina wasn't in the midst of having this hanging over them for years nor were USC and UCLA on their way in.
Unless he has second thoughts about not taking the UAB job and feels the need to prove something (though this would hardly be it), I'd strongly pass.

If this were to be the actual HC, it'd be a no brainer. Head coach of a school that's in what will be one of two super conferences realistically when the dust clears with a contract that would likely be orders of magnitude greater than the USFL salary? Shit show or not, sign me up. But "helping" the interim coach seems so amorphous (which seems like DW's issue) it feels like a no win situation with not much reward, doesn't seem worth it if you've already got a comfortable gig.

Quick story on Wannstedt and Northwestern, which is talking to some veteran coaches for a possible role assisting interim head coach David Braun. Sources tell @PeteThamel
that Skip Holtz will not be coming to the school. <<

So apparently he will be in an advisory role after all, yet will remain Stallions' coach

I don't take this as a positive for the USFL. This along with Mich not having season tickets for sale.

Holtz is clearly not the HC at NW as Braun is and if he were to become the HC in the future that would undermine Braun now. But clearly it a divides Holtz's attention at a minimum or hedges his bets at worst.
>> The USFL has not announced its plans for the 2024 season, although season tickets for the Stallions are on sale. In 2022, the USFL played its entire regular season in Birmingham, moving to Canton for the postseason because of the arrival of the World Games in the Magic City. In 2023, the USFL placed two teams in each of four cities, with the Stallions sharing Birmingham with the Breakers. <<
While at the same time the Fox announcers and DJ said they'd be returning, DJ even talking NFL partnerships... still its lacking details. This is certainly something to keep an eye on.

It's got a little bit of June Jones' would-have-been return to Hawaii, just all over the place HUH?????????
Plus, you can't even get advertising off it (that would be lame but at least it's somewhat understandable in comparison). Their first three games are CBS/BTN/ACCN--they might end up with an FS1 game or two, that's it.
I'm getting this less and less, especially since it looked last week like it was DOA. I mean what does he really want to even the score against Kevin Sumlin (forget UMD/Taulia, I wouldn't even put anything on NU to beat Howard) that bad?
