>> It took two overtime “innings” in a “shootout” format to decide a winner, but the Pittsburgh Maulers find themselves in the USFL championship game for the first time after a thrilling 31-27 victory over the Michigan Panthers in the USFL semifinals Saturday night at Tom Benson Stadium in Canton, Ohio.

Maulers quarterback Troy Williams threw a TD pass to Mason Stokke in the first inning of overtime and ran for a 2-yard score in the second inning, and the Maulers defense stopped Michigan on its first two attempts to secure the victory. <<

>> The Maulers advanced to the USFL championship game with a 31-27 victory Saturday night at Canton, Ohio, but it wasn’t easy.

Cole Murphy’s 47-yard field goal for the Michigan Panthers with four seconds remaining sent the Maulers and Panthers to overtime with a berth in the USFL championship game at stake. A series of three alternating plays from the 2-yard line decided the overtime — much like a hockey shootout — and the Maulers won by scoring twice and holding the Panthers out of the end zone.

The Maulers believed they’d won the game in regulation when Troy Williams threw a 6-yard, fourth-down touchdown pass to Ishmael Hyman with 44 seconds to play to put the Maulers up 27-24, E.J. Perry drove the Panthers to Murphy’s tying field goal.

Williams finished 23 of 40 for 203 yards with a touchdown pass while Perry went 23 of 38 for 370 yards and two touchdowns. Both teams combined for 701 yards of offense in a game that was supposed to feature two of the league's top defenses.<<

>> Possessing the best defense in the USFL has its perks, and that certainly paid off for the Pittsburgh Maulers in a 31-27 shootout overtime victory to advance to the USFL Championship game.

The Maulers and Michigan Panthers went back-and-forth down the stretch of the final quarter and with a 47-yard field goal by Cole Murphy, the Panthers tied the game at the end of regulation to send it into overtime.

With both teams having three possible opportunities from the two-yard line to score in overtime, Troy Williams and the Maulers cashed in on the first two attempts as Williams hit tight end Mason Stokke and then subsequently wheeled into the end zone on a quarterback keeper for the second score. <<
