That worked out very badly for the World Football League, and the stadium and Ypsilanti hasn't gotten any better in the subsequent 48 years.

A goal (to have all teams in home markets) yes, likely? I doubt it. With Birmingham already "home" that leave 7 teams I see 3-5 of those in home markets in 2023. If the league is a big hit, well that goal may happen!

The optics might not be good if the Pittsburgh Maulers play in front of 10,000-15,000 fans at Heinz Field, which seats 68,400 or the Bandits playing in front of 15,000 at Raymond James Stadium, which seats 65,400. Houston, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Birmingham and New Orleans all have smaller stadiums in which the USFL teams can play in, something in which Pittsburgh and Tampa do not have. Houston, Philly and New Jersey could all end up playing at MLS stadiums. New Orleans has Yulman Stadium, which seats 30,000 but its owned by Tulane University and they might not want the USFL there. There's also Tad Gormley Stadium which seats 26,500 but that stadium I think would have to undergo significant renovations plus it has a track around it and I don't know how the USFL feels about venues that also double as track and field stadiums. For the Michigan Panthers, I did mention Eastern Michigan, but that might not be a good option. The only other two major stadiums in the Detroit Metro Area are Ford Field, which seats 65,000 and Michigan Stadium but that seats 107,000 people and no way does Michigan allow for the USFL to play there. There are other smaller venues but those are under 10,000 and I would think that the USFL would want stadiums to have a minimum of 15,000.

That would be a DISASTER. That is the least telegenic field in America. Whoever decided installed the gray field was committing malpractice. I'd set up in a high school field before I went there.
If Detroit can't fill the lower bowl in Ford Field, they don't deserve a team, imo.

That's a good point. Sure some of these stadiums seat 60k+, but the lower bowls are usually in the 20-30k range. There's no reason legitimate spring football can't achieve those numbers. Rent at some of these stadiums may even be cheaper than rent at a smaller MLS sized stadium. Metlife for example, is barely used between February-May, and there's several rental options depending on how much of the stadium is being occupied.

Fox should definitely bite the bullet and rent Ford Field five times. The alternatives are awful.
Eventually Detroit FC will find a way to get a new soccer-first stadium built. Even new USL stadiums are getting absurdly large because they're projecting future MLS expansion. Realistic for Detroit, if not most of the rest. But a large stadium takes longer to build. Figure a very simple 15,000 seat stadium by 2024 or later?
