The Pittsburgh Steelers have brought in former XFL San Antonio Brahmas long snapper Rex Sunahara ahead of their 2023 training camp. Going back for his second stint with Pittsburgh, Sunahara signed with the Steelers earlier this week.

Sunahara entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Miami Dolphins in 2020 after a collegiate career that included stops at the University of Rhode Island, where he was a basketball player, and West Virginia, where he shifted to football full-time in 2018 and 2019.

After being released by the Dolphins, he was signed to a reserve/futures contract prior to the 2021 season and was then released for a second time, signed and released again in August. He then signed with the Steelers late in 2021 but did not make the roster or appear in any games.

The 6’2 and 242-pound long snapper was drafted by the San Antonio Brahmas with the team’s first pick of the specialists round in the inaugural XFL Draft.

Sunahara is expected to compete with incumbent long snapper Christian Kuntz during training camp. Kuntz played for the Dallas Renegades in the truncated 2020 XFL season.
