D. Johnston on UFL during NFL Game today

Post by 4th&long »

>> Moose nailed it.

The UFL is not just about returning players to the NFL but helping them stay there.

@dallascowboys
K Brandon Aubrey and WR KaVontae Turpin are outstanding examples of alumni the @USFL
has produced since its return.

He's likely to talk about it more on Tuesday on his weekly radio show.

he did his weekly local radio appearance today and didn't say anything major about the news but said that the 8 team format that was announced had to happen in order to stabilize spring football. He also said that the NFL was waiting and seeing which of the two leagues comes out on top.

1) so are all investors and long-term media partners. No one wanted to investor or contract with the loser

2) NFL is waiting for what? I hope not a formal minor league. Perhaps take a stake? Allow some PS players there?

The two league in spring was a disaster - I knew they'd merge sooner or later or one folds after 2023. Called it. Not surprised. Happy it happened quickly.

He mentioned a testing of potential NFL rules.

One of the good things about the UFL being hubbed in Arlington now is that Darryl Johnston can drive to UFL Headquarters in his own car from his own house, instead of having to fly to Birmingham, rent a car and a hotel room and drive to USFL Headquarters.

That explains it! He was the one behind the merger

In all seriousness - that's good news, means he's like on board for a while

Remember, before he was trash-talking the XFL at every turn in '23, he was a staffer with the Renegades. So this would be a fitting homecoming for him.

Here he is talking about the St Louis market.

I found this line from the article interesting.

" San Antonio will serve as a market for the Battlehawks’ training camp, which will begin in the middle of February."

I like this quote:
“I don’t want us to be considered a developmental league or a feeder league. We’re a professional, stand-alone football league. What we’re trying to do is maximize the talent and quality of play in our league.”
This might ruffle Cardinale's feathers a bit, but Oliver Luck had it right when he talked about losing control when you let a big gun like the NFL come in and start dictating your decisions. And given the NFL's past record with minor league investment, it's no guarantee of success, even with the money they're making.

As for the San Antonio thing... I am thinking maybe sloppy reporting. I saw it in an article on the Michigan Panthers from The Detroit News earlier today that claimed Arlington was one of the teams being shut down  .
